Oh The Sheer Joy / Sequins

Tweet | Facebook | Email

Ah, sequins. How you fill me with girlish delight. If last night’s Brit awards are anything to go by, I’m in excellent company. Let’s take a look at your famous fans: Lily Allen opted for not one but two helpings of sequins, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley poured herself into a glittering red Saint-Laurent gown (Jessica Rabbit, eat your heart out), Ellie Goulding picked up a gong in a gold riot of sequins, and Beyonce shimmered in a floor-length version.

Though my predilection for the sparkly makes me a year-round fan, it is a bit of an unseasonable choice. Their ubiquity on the red carpet (in Scotland – oh I shudder), can therefore only be down to their feel-good factor; sequins are the fashion equivalent of red lipstick, taking things up a notch and eliciting the feeling of grown-up glamour. If done well they are also really rather figure-flattering (key here is to avoid the slightly-too-tight sequinned dress – every lump and bump will be highlighted as you move).

Here are three sequinned beauties that will elevate your mood day-to-day if, like me, red carpets to hit are a little scarce:

– Crystalised Knit Dress, £39 from French Connection.

– Ginevie Top, £25 at Coast.

– Black Sequin Print Wool-Blend Scarf by Marc Jacobs, £150 at Liberty London.
