Navigating Venice in the rain is a tricky affair. With water everywhere, my overriding memory of our final day in the city was mostly of trying to avoid becoming soggy messes – ducking into coffee shops, a church and hotel in the attempt.
The city surprised me on this day: its character seemed so entirely other to that which I’ve experienced when it’s hot – almost entirely free of the knots of tourists who serve as constant reminders of the present day, Venice seemed timeless and, rather than vibrant and pulsating with energy, it was slightly eerie with melancholic undertones.
If you’re looking to see the city in another light, I’d firmly suggest a winter visit…
