In March I started volunteering with an organisation that puts on a monthly tea for the elderly. As I’d basically quite like to be a Victorian and therefore have a penchant for good manners, a properly constructed sentence and stories of bygone eras, I find the company of ‘the elderly’ very agreeable indeed and the Sunday teas are a pleasure.
Last Sunday I donned my finest ‘tea party’ gear for an afternoon with Joan, Jan, Mary and Hilda, but, in retrospect, I sort of messed up on the outfit front – while a belted, knee-length dress is indeed the height of appropriateness for just such an occasion, the presence of said belt meant that I could only really half enjoy the sandwiches, scones etc etc. The moral of the tale: wear a belt for cake-less events only or if embarking on a diet – it’ll keep you away from overeating like nothing else.
