The Glitter Menu

I recently wrote a piece for Powder entitled ‘The Glitter Rules (Yes, Adults Can Do It)‘ and stand by everything I said in it: a glittery eye, when applied with a little nous, is a seriously great make-up trick to have up your sleeve.

First, it opens eyes up, making them appear wider and more vibrant. Second, it speaks of an appealing touch of irreverence and frivolity in a character. It also is indisputably festive and therefore perfect for NYE…

How To //

The most foolproof way to go is to line a teeny bit of glitter along the upper lash line, but I’ve come to prefer a haze of smoky shimmer as it looks more sophisticated and offers both the sexiness of smoke and the joy of glitter in one whammy.

Here’s how I stop it from looking teenage: layering. First, on goes a colour to provide a shimmery, not glittery, base. Chanel’s Illusion d’Ombres are ideal for this but basically any cream shadow with a touch of shimmer will do the job. Next, take your glitter and pat it on top. Wait for it to dry, add mascara and you’re good to go to the ball.

Final word to the wise – I use glitter that’s already in a fluid so don’t have to ‘stick’ it on. If you’re going with anything loose try using a dab of Vaseline to hold the particles onto skin if your shadow doesn’t do it, or alternatively get your hands on Too Faced Glitter Insurance, which sits between an eyelid primer and eyelash glue in hold but won’t stick your lids together.
