The mania for primers shows no signs of abating, but I still have a reservation: despite having found a few that have really done it for me (Eve Lom & Nude By Nature are standouts), I seriously struggle to slot them in.
To me, you see, a serum and decent SPF is non-negotiable, leaving my skin already ‘primed’, as it were. Adding another layer before base would often be overwhelming to my skin, however thinly laid down.
There is merit in a good primer, though – they really do make skin look and behave better over the course of a day. My mantra is save them for special occasions or exceptionally poor skin days when another layer will help rather than hinder.
Caveats issued, here’s the skinny on these two new primers //
For dry or lined skin / Dermalogica Hydra Blur due to launch here next week / This has that whole optical blur thing minus any shimmer going on. I really liked the finish around my eyes in particular, where it softened the little fine lines that spring up when I emote. I’d have no qualms in recommending this to ‘mature skin’ (vile expression – sorry – needs must); it’d soften lines, hang onto moisture and make everything a little more even.
For oiliness / Benefit The PoreFessional Matte Rescue Invisible Finish Instant Mattifying Gel due to launch here next week / This really, really mattifies – I use this on my t-zone and not a whisper of shine breaks through my base all day. This is a really savvy purchase if you are prone to shininess but don’t like to finish your base with powder, though I’d proceed with caution on using it everyday if you’re prone to congestion – this made my skin a touch more blocked around my nose.
