Inside Our Sun Kits / Me, Mum, Mick

Rather than just bang out a list of things I’ve been using out here in Portugal, I thought it may be helpful to also ask my mum and sister to share the contents of their sun beauty bags too given that their concerns and skin types are different to mine. Be prepared for a long ‘un – we’re a cosmetics-obsessed family… //

Beach SPF Kit

Mum / My focus is on moisture and mitigating damage. I’ve used Clarins my whole life and am relying on the Clarins Sun Wrinkle Control Cream for Face in SPF 50+ at the moment out here. On my body, I’m using Bakel Broad Spectrum SPF 30, which I like because it’s really hydrating and can go on my face on the beach if I’m trying to pack lightly. My lips are dryer now I’m older so I am protecting them with Chantecaille Lip Screen Tint in SPF 15. I also spray some StriVectin UV Protective Spray into my highlighted hair every morning.

After my shower, I use Dr. Hauschka After Sun because it’s very soothing and also cooling – I find the heat out here a bit much so anything that promises to be refreshing always ends up in my shopping basket!

Beach Beauty Kit

Me / It stands to reason that I’d have the most things out here – I’m a product junkie by nature and love using all the good stuff when I have time to enjoy them. For my bod, I’ve been sticking to Zelens Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Silky Oil – it’s delightful and makes me look slightly shiny and (I think) therefore longer of limb.

I’ve got two things for my face: Alpha H Protection Plus Daily SPF 50+, which is a non-greasy, serious business SPF that lends a little warmth (it’s not coloured, per se, just tinted slightly to enliven, not offer coverage), and Sisley SPF 30 Tinted Sun Care when I need to see people and look a bit more presentable (it’s an SPF/base hybrid – full review here).

If I’ve been swimming and my hair feels a bit parched, I chuck some Elasticizer on. I’m topping up the moisture on my face with Emma Hardie Plump & Glow Hydrating Facial Mist.

After I’ve showered, I’ll chuck on an Institut Esthederm Lift & Repair Eye Contour Lift Patch (my absolute favourite – these really rehydrate the area around eyes), and Thalgo’s Cold Marine Cream to cool and tend to my parched skin.

Portugal Beach Beauty

Mick / I’ve previously been a bit slapdash with sun protection and now have pigmentation so I’ve been much more careful on this holiday and am OBSESSED with the Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration SPF 50 – it’s so hydrating and really does smooth on like silk!

On my face, I’ve been using the Institut Esthederm Photo Reverse Protection Fluid. Apparently it helps to reverse dark patches (or so my sister tells me!) so I’m hoping it works. I also like face sprays and am using the Clinique Moisture Surge Face Spray while I’m on the beach.

In the evening, I use Creme de la Mer The After Sun Enhancer – it contains little golden particles that make my tan look deeper and it soaks in quickly, but it’s insanely expensive so I am sparing with it and steal some of Mad’s cream for bits that won’t be on display [Editor’s Note: am displeased by this revelation and hid said Thalgo cream directly after reading]. If my face is dry, I’ll apply a layer of La Roche-Posay Hydraphase Intense Masque as I potter around when I get back from the beach. My hair gets a spritz of Revlon Equave Blonde Detangling Conditioner before I dry it.
