Freelance Beauty Editor and Acting Associate Beauty Editor at Net-a-Porter The Edit and PORTER, Suzanne Scott, on her life in beauty //
“The first product I can remember from my childhood is Johnson’s Baby Lotion. My mum used it twice a day – every day – as part of her cleansing routine. Some of my earliest memories at home are of that pink bottle and the scent of the lotion.
When I was younger, I had no idea that a career in beauty journalism existed. I always knew I wanted to be a journalist of some sort – though initially my original plan was to become a war correspondent! I read fashion journalism at university and, during breaks, I interned at glossies like Tatler and New Woman. Degree in hand, I landed an internship at ELLE, after which I wangled my way onto the fashion features team. While working there, I became quite friendly with the beauty team and found beauty really played to my interest in science. When an opportunity within beauty opened up, I made the move. Since then, I’ve been a member of the team at Marie Claire, ELLE and Net-a-Porter, as well as freelancing between stints at magazines.
There’s no resting on your laurels when you’re working for yourself and you quickly learn to be efficient and proactive. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt so far, it’s to be adaptable; the journalism landscape changes almost on a weekly basis and you have to be able to keep up.
The Quick-Fire Beauty Questions //
In my handbag, I always have... Neal’s Yard Organic Defence Hand Spray – because the travelling on the Tube is disgusting.
The 5 make-up products I couldn’t be without are… MAC Paint Pot in Ground Work, Benefit They’re Real Mascara, Sisley So Intense Eyeliner, NARS Illuminator in Copacabana, and Burberry Full Kisses in Nude 505.
The 3 skincare products I love the most are… SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic, Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water for Sensitive Skin (the best one I’ve tried), and SkinCeuticals Retinol.
My beauty mantra is… Prevention is better than cure – don’t leave the house without an SPF!
My biggest beauty issue is... frizz … And I solve it with… permanent blow dries.
If I could stop people from doing one thing related to beauty, it’d be… sunbathing and smoking (I need two!).
What’s your favourite kind of spa treatment – and why? A deep tissue back and shoulder massage. I sit for hours on end at my desk and my posture suffers for it.
Do you have an inflight beauty routine? Yes. Crucially, I wear no makeup at all, not a scrap (I don’t care who sees me). Then I layer on Aromatherapy Associates Inner Strength Soothing Face Oil. And, if I’m feeling bold, I’ll wear Elemis Pro-Collagen Hydra-Gel Eye Masks for the duration so I don’t look like death upon landing.
What’s on your bedside table? This Works Sleep Plus Pillow Spray, Sleep Plus Dream Body and Sleep Plus Hair Elixir (I’m a troubled sleeper), La Mer The Renewal Oil, Aveda Hand Relief Night Renewal Serum, and whatever book I’m currently reading.
Tell us one weird non-beauty related habit you have… I’m quite OCD and can’t leave a room for bed without making sure every object is in their rightful spot.” [Editor’s note: I too need everything to be in its rightful spot before bed – though I thought that was normal. Suzanne putting this in the ‘weird’ category has opened a realm of new worry…]
