When casting around for a guest for episode one of Beauty Full Lives, Ella Eyre kept springing to mind. I’ve interviewed her a few times, and have always been hugely impressed by her – she’s one of those disarmingly talented and beautiful people who also seems completely comfortable when exposing her vulnerabilities. As Beauty Full Lives is all about exploring the feelings surrounding self and image and products, I thought she’d be an ideal candidate.
She was game, and in the inaugural episode talks about going from a little girl rifling through her mum’s moisturiser stash to a boarding school scholar who couldn’t afford the same cosmetics as her privileged peers to a world famous artist with two MOBO awards and a Brit under her belt – as well as a formidable make-up stash that keeps growing.
But here’s what I find most compelling about Ella: despite her many successes, she still struggles with uncertainty and is willing to discuss those feelings with candour – and does so in this episode. It’s quite something to do that as a pop star on the rise – a position where image is key and where the risky business of quite literally going on record to say sometimes she feels unsure, fallible, felled, is a big deal.
Other themes we touch on include asserting herself and taking ownership of her image, as well as getting over nerves on photo shoots, as well as sharing some of her favourite products from her back catalog and today.
I hope you enjoy the episode – please do rate it (well, provided you want to rate it well!), review (ditto), and subscribe if you’re like to hear more. There’ll be a new one out every week.
